Total war is coming bringing hunger, sword and flame.
The game of The Greenwood isn't just life or death, it's far more important than that.
I’m Barcud, Sergeant at Arms of the Rangers’ Guild in the virtual reality RPG, The Greenwood. By taunting our enemies, I’d provoked a war, and now those enemy hordes threatened our very existence. In a race against time, I had to level my village and build up the high stone walls to keep them out.
I knew I had the tricks, I thought I had the guile, and my friends were counting on me. Maybe those weeks playing Total War weren't wasted after all because our foes were many, our allies were few and time was running out.
We devised a cunning strategy, gathered our friends, trained our armies, and waited.
Then they attacked with knights, beast-men, warlocks, sorcerers and their orc allies, unleashing War in the Greenwood.
War in the Greenwood is the third book in The Greenwood series.

War in the Greenwood A LitRPG Novel edition by Galen Wolf Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews
When game developers allow a vicious gamer to return to The Greenwood, all hell breaks loose. Once banished for his brutal gaming practices, Attila is back and now rules the city of Horrabia. The forces of good in the city of Vinab and the Ranger's Guild in the Forest of Dreams set themselves against Horrabia and hatch a plan. Unable to act openly against Horrabia without provocation, they decide to build a new village near the edge of Horrabia's territory to draw them out. And they choose ranger Barcud to found the new village.
Tasked with building a village and a secret army to antagonize Horrabia, Barcud is initially interested only in revenge. After being the victim of level stripping, Barcud just wants to make the Horrabians pay. But after spending so much time watching his little city grow, Barcud is determined to save it.
I really enjoyed this LitRPG, it was fast moving and kept me interested. It was focused on city building and war strategy, with a side bit of questing. There weren't a lot of stats, which I appreciate in an audiobook when I can't skim that part! I also appreciate the mix of male and female player characters. The writing could get a little clunky, and there were some inconsistencies like in game time vs. real time that changed throughout the book. It wasn't enough to detract from the story though, and I really enjoyed the read. This was the first book I've read in the Greenwood Chronicles, and I plan on picking up A Player in the Greenwood, Barcud's origin story.
I liked the narration, David Loving performed evenly and not too dramatically. He read at a good pace and his narration immersed me in the book. I requested a copy of the audiobook, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.
2 books in and several stories. I love some of characters. Lively and memorable. I really appreciated the glossary of gaming terms. These books remind me of nights with pizza and soda playing table top RPGs and conquest games.
I tried to get into this but there is so much that doesn't gel. The level differentials don't seem to have much effect, the abilities are legion and OP, the travel systems make little sense, the PCs are few, and the timeframes are all over the place.
Consumables are things in a game designed to be collected in large amounts and then spent to buy things. I mention this cuz it's not in the glossary.
So. Didn't like it. It has litrpg stats attached after certain chapters and talks a bit about game mechanics, but doesn't feel like a real litrpg.
It's well written, but I wasn't able to care who won the battles.
I wish I could point out what this book is missing. I was bored and had to force myself to finish it, but I can see this would be a good book if it had that missing whatever to make it good.
I'm a fan of builders so my dreams are usually dashed. This story had a bit of village building. On the cheat, but still some building. It also has a main character with a knowledge of strategy and tactics. Having a character that thinks and executes plans is a joy.
When the evil Attila becomes the leader of the city of Horrabia, a plan is hatched by the forces of good to found a new Ranger city as a bait to show the good cities of the danger from Attila. Barcud the ranger, has been chosen to found and build up the new city in a real time strategy type build system. He used his skills to manage resources, hire NPCs, and build up his new city in preparation for the war coming to the Greenwood.

If you’ve read the other stories in the series, you’ll recognize characters from all the other novels and short stories.
The first part of this story is a fun Real Time Strategy (RTS) description of building the new ranger city, managing resources, hiring NPCs, managing population, assigning jobs, and increasing NPC fighter levels.
There’s a little questing at the 27-42% mark meant to raise a few important characters levels with a ‘who done it’ mystery quest. While interesting, it feels out of place in the context of the novel. This actually feels like a short story that was inserted into this story.
Large scale combat from here on. Back and forth of combat. Seeking of NPC allies. Sieges, and tactical combat. All good stuff.
Score 7 out of 10.
The plot is interesting and fresh! However I would highly recommend an editor for sentence structure and grammar! Keep writing, you'll get there!
