Remember to Forget Clayburn Novels Book 1 edition by Deborah Raney Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Deb Raney interlaces romance, suspense, and in-depth character development in her books. I also like the repackaging by Raney Day Press by Deborah and her husband Ken, a gifted artist. About Remember to Forget . . .
The elements mentioned above are present in this read. Raney always pulls current cultural issues into the storyline. This time—abuse. Abuse rips the psyche, damaging the individual for normal relationships. Maggie (Meg) accurately portrayed the fear, ambivalence, and poor coping skills of an abused girlfriend. Some reviewers mentioned the struggle about Maggie's identity went on too long. In some ways I would agree, but considering the devastating effects of abuse, resolutions can go on longer.
I agree with reviewers there were some lose ends, but since this is Book 1 of a series, I hope those will be sewed up in the coming novels. Makes me want to find installment 2! Thanks for a lovely read.
This book carries the reader along at a fast
Pace. Could hardly put it down. This is a story
Of an abusive boyfriend and the victim running
For her life. As she travels further along she
Meets people who help her and she gets
Woven into a web of lies along the way. Good
Book! You'll enjoy it!!
Maggie Anderson has “lived as a virtual hostage to Kevin Bryson for almost two years.” Sympathetic and believable, Maggie unexpectedly finds a way to escape the horror of her reality. “She had feared pain in the past, but she’d never been afraid to die.” Trevor Ashlock lost his family almost two years ago. “She hadn’t been there a week, and she was already trying his life in knots.” Is it possible to reinvent yourself? “She’d been handed the gift of freedom on a silver platter.” Hope and inspiration transform Maggie’s life. “Heaven was hearing her prayers. God had been with her in every detail of her journey.” I was caught up in this story following Maggie’s journey until the abrupt ending. It just ended but wasn’t resolved. I was very disappointed and was left with several unanswered questions.
Great story! Hard to put down. Meg is in a controlling and abusive relationship with her boyfriend, Kevin. Who would have ever thought a carjacking in New York could be the answer for her escape? Meg ends up on a journey before landing in Clayburn, Kansas.
She ends up at a struggling bed and breakfast owned by two very sweet Christian people.
Trevor, who has his own grief to deal with is working after hours doing some remolding for the b&b. Do you see a possible love connection coming? I won't say more as to spoil it for those who haven't read the book yet.
Meg wove a great web of lies to those who have loved on her and helped her in her great time of need. She felt she needed to lie to protect herself from Kevin whom she felt sure would come after her. Will Trevor still want to be her friend when he realizes everything about her that he knows is a lie?
This one won't disappoint. I recommend it.
I loved some of the characters in this book, particularly Wren, and it was enjoyable, even though predictable. My reasons for not rating ihigher were 1.The never-ending angst and guilt about the lies Meg told to people she met along her escape route. She didn't have much guilt about having a live-in boyfriend for two years, however. Lying to save her life on the run seemed understandable and almost necessary in that situation. Why she thought Trevor would never forgive her puzzled me, especially after her revelation to Wren.
2.The book seemed rushed toward the end, leaving several things unexplained. How did the boyfriend track her down? Not a peep about that, nor was the relationship between Trevor and the friend responsible for the accident ever resolved...and the boyfriend was on the run at the end. Is there a sequel to this book? Made me wonder.
3. The writing was average, and the plot was mildly interesting though not unique at all, but just not fleshed-out enough to make a satisfactory ending for this reader...just my opinion, of course.
I'm not quite sure what to think of this book. I did like the characters, though sometimes I was a little confused by the way Maggie/Meg acted. SPOILER ALERT [Why couldn't she go to the police? Yeah she was worried about Kevin, but police are there to help. And leaving the safety of the full house with the guy she's terrified of? To me that was completely crazy and makes no sense!] END SPOILER I could understand her not trusting guys, but no one? Trevor was dealing with a tough situation, and Wren was a sweet woman.
The Christianity was really not much. I kept waiting for Wren and Trevor to talk about Christ, to share God's love and forgiveness with Meg, but they didn't. Sure they prayed before they ate and they went to church on Sunday, but I was expecting something more. And then at the end SPOILER ALERT [when she was in the river and in danger of drowning] END SPOILER Meg calls for help from Trevor and God. That suddenly seemed to make her a christian. Yes, there was a little talk about sins and lying, but it had all been forgiven. It was a little confusing to me. Was Meg a christian because she had asked God to help? Was it because she finally confessed everything to Trevor?
The writing kept my interested and I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened.
Maggie used an unusual event to leave an abusive situation but was afraid to be herself, afraid her abuser would find her. She didn't know it at the time, but God was leading her path all the way and directing her right where she needed to be ... to find herself and rely on Him. What a beautiful story of forgiveness Trevor and Wren displayed for her to feel accepted. I look forward to reading more by this author
