The book of missionary heroes Basil Mathews Books

I confess that when I started reading this book I was concerned about the author making too much of the men and women whose stories are told in this book, and not enough of the Lord who sent and sustained them. As I read along, however, and as I put myself in their shoes and considered what great trials, sacrifices, dangers, and incredible daily stress each of these endured for Christ and His Gospel. my opinion changed. My wife and I have served as cross-cultural missionaries now for 16 years. It is good for us to read stories of such devotion, sacrifice, and bravery for Christ. Yes, the author would have indeed done better to have made the book more devotional and God-centered, but it is still a book well worth reading. It is a challenge and encouragement to all Christians at all times. The heroes of this volume include missionary men and women from various lands and backgrounds across the centuries who strove to reach the lost in the most horrific of pagan circumstances. It is worth remembering that the Word of God itself lifts up heroes by name as well, recording their deeds of faith and bravery, people renowned for their example, though but men and women. It is God that enables such faith and courage, but the believer must act on that faith, which is why God will reward such deeds.

The book of missionary heroes Basil Mathews Books Reviews

These are the people they don't teach you about in school. An encouraging and enlightening read for all Christians especially for those interested in missionary history. Worth the read.
it's an interesting book with great stories of missionary heroes, but it is written more for jr. high level students or younger. If you want a book with great examples of people depending on God, then this is it--just know that sometimes it seems to talk down to the children.
I loved this book and was so sorry when it was finished! It gave me a lot of new information about a subject I am much interested in. It definitely gives another approach to the concept of a "hero." These men and women were truly heroes in the greatest sense yet most of them I had never heard of before. A wonderful, informative read!
I was not all that impressed. It is a compilation of short accounts of missionaries lives. There were several that were engaging due to the adventure or peril that some faced. But what I was looking for was an in depth look into the life and faith of these missionaries. This gave me a taste, but it was not satisfying. It did however introduce me to a few names of missionaries that I was not aware of who I may pursue reading about in the future.
This is one book that really stirred up my soul in many ways. Reading story after story of different people sacrificing ALL they had & more for something greater than themselves has left an everlasting mark on me. Highly recommended for anyone looking for something bigger in life to purpose to, for the sake of the Kingdom.
I didn't expect much from a free book, but this one caught me off guard. Written like historical fiction, the stories of these missionaries baffled me. Basil takes us on a trip around the world with the various people who touched continents and islands with the message of Christ.

Written in 1922, it's not boring in any way. He openly shares successes and failures of people who risk everything for the gospel. Some found great welcome and some were burned alive. He pulls no punches.

It made me do some hunting. Could these people be real? Did they really adventure out the way he shares? As far as I've been able to discover, they did.

I love hearing about first generation missionaries, but also the adventures of converts who became missionaries, especially within the Pacific Islands. If I can be even a bit like them, I'll happily face my Maker.
I've been reading this book to my 6 and 4 year olds at bed time and though it's not written for a younger audience my Children and I have loved it. I sometime have to simplify the wording, and definitely spend a lot of time explaining things. But that's the whole point, to engage my children with what God has done through ordinary people who have an extraordinary view of their God and consider the sacrifice of their lives for His glory to be, not just a worthy endeavor, but the utmost privilege! I appreciate the way the stories are written in such short chapters and how they trace certain key themes throughout all the accounts. Most of these missionaries I had never heard of, so I've enjoyed learning from many more heroes of the faith as well! May we never forget what those before us have sacrificed so that we might know the truth of God's Word and the salvation He offers. And may we be gripped by an equal constraint to live for the glory of the Lord, no matter the cost.
